Why Did I Receive A Miami-Dade Expressway (MDX) Toll-By-Plate Notice?

You traveled through an MDX toll zone without the system recognizing a valid transponder. If you receive an MDX Toll-By-Plate notice and have a SunPass account, it may mean your license plate is not on your SunPass account or the license plate information on the account is inaccurate or there may be something wrong with your SunPass account (such as, no funds on the account or an expired credit card). Although MDX accepts SunPass, MDX is a separate government entity from SunPass, and MDX always makes a second attempt to obtain payment from SunPass using the photographic image of the vehicle's license plate prior to sending a Toll-By-Plate notice.

What is a Toll-by-Plate Account?

When a motor vehicle passes through an MDX toll zone and the toll payment is not made by an electronic transponder, a photographic image of the vehicle's license plate will be captured at the toll lane. The license plate data provides the needed information to obtain the registered owner's address so an MDX Toll-By-Plate account can be created and a notice generated.

What Happens If I Don't Pay?

Failure to pay tolls is against the law (316.1001, Florida Statutes) and results in assessment of additional fees and referral to a collection firm, as well as a registration hold placed on the registered owner (320.02, Florida Statutes).
